Antenatal Care

At Coolock Family Practice we'll be there for you all during your pregnancy.

We will check that both you and your baby are well and give you useful information to help you have a healthy pregnancy. This included tips and advice on including healthy eating and exercise and we'll also answer any questions you may have.

Beginning your Antenatal Care:

When you find out you are pregnant, call us on 01 816 0366 to make an appointment to confirm your test result and start your antenatal care.

We will help you develop a maternity healthcare plan that takes into account all your health needs and preferences. We'll calculate your estimated due date and provide you with a referral letter to present at the maternity hospital of your choice.

In the Republic of Ireland all mothers are entitled to free maternity care. You can choose to obtain these services under a system of combined care split between your doctor and maternity unit - known as the Maternity and Infant Care Scheme or, alternatively, you can choose to visit a hospital antenatal clinic as either a Public, Semi-Private or Private patient.

What will happen at your first visit?

At your first visit we will provide you with key information about your pregnancy. We'll talk to you about folic acid and vitamin D supplements, nutrition, diet and food hygiene and give you information on lifestyle factors that may affect the health of both Mother and baby such as smoking, recreational drug use and drinking alcohol.

We'll monitor and record your blood pressure, sugar and iron levels, blood count and regular urine checks. We will monitor the health and positioning of your baby as pregnancy progresses including readings of the foetal heart rate and the pattern of foetal activity.
